                           - One that rescuers hear on a daily basis!

Maybe you, or someone you know, is thinking about a new pet for their home. We’d like to give you something to think about.  For most of us there would be no consideration in this matter at all. Puppies are adorable and they are trainable. (Adult dogs, to the age of 10 & 11 years, are also trainable for basic to sophisticated learning process)  YOU CANT TEACH AN OLD DOG NEW TRICKS is specifically meant for humans.
But, this year alone, Americans will turn in nearly 6 million pups to dog pounds and shelters.  Most of them being under the age of 18 months.  Almost all of them relinquished because the humans admit they couldn't train them. Of course they are cute for 6 mo, but then they grow large, ornery, energetic and destructive in their chewing and digging stages.  The worst way to handle this is what the majority of you will do - lock it outside in disgust and anger with no further guidance. (the disgust and anger is really at ourselves for failing miserably,  but we blame the pups because we can.)
Americans are so quick to point a finger and place blame on the 'other party' because, 'the dog was just stupid', or what ever ''excuse'' would be available, but never admitting that they just didn't know how to train this dog.  So, below is a story that rescuers here on a DAILY BASIS!!! I can't tell you how many times I've gotten letters or phone calls with the same comments or message.
Remember this: SECOND HAND DOGS UNDERSTAND THEY NOT ONLY HAVE A SECOND CHANCE, BUT REALIZE THIS HOME LOVES THEM - something that the first home did NOT provide or they wouldn't be in the dog pound in the first place.  They will reward you with all the love and attention you give them x 10.  You only need have a little common sense and understanding of they type of pet you want and to think of the lifestyle you are willing to continue with or change if necessary.  These pets come fully grown (no surprises in size or length of hair) spayed and neutered (healthier for your pet and no contributing factor to overpopulation)  Past their chewing and digging stages, can walk on leash or sit on command  and housebroken.  All this for $45 or so and the bond will be total and complete in about one week's time.  The ease and simplicity is only outweighed by the compassion offered through the adoption.
Fact:  80% of the dogs relinquished to pounds around the nation are so because, by admission of the guardian, they were simply unable to provide the necessary training these dogs needed.  Mostly this occurs due to lack of time and effort on the part of the human, but almost never the behavior of the dog.
Of course, there is nothing cuter than a puppy. But they are only puppies for six months before they grow into larger dogs.  Are you really prepared to take the time and effort required to do all the loving and training for the little bouncing puppy with endless energy? Be honest now.  It takes a LOT of time,  tremendous patience and more than just a few dollars here and a few dollars there if you plan to be responsible and provide for his or her best health.  You may well have been successful with a puppy in the past, but that does not mean you are a good or qualified trainer.  Consider yourself lucky and cut your losses before they get out of hand.
There are two paragraphs below – each showing one of your options.
Then there is a story, further down – a story that is heard hundreds of times each day by rescuers around the nation who re home adult dogs that some idiot turned in to be killed.
No one is suggesting that it is necessary to follow this information.  Only that your options are likely to be much more varied than previously thought.  You too may see the overwhelming benefits by trying this, as opposed to working against your assumptions of the past.
Wouldn’t it be nice to adopt your next dog already spayed and neutered, current on all vaccinations,  no digging, no chewing, housebroken, walks on a leash, sits on command, choose from any breed or mix your imagination could conceive and not pay over $50 total?  It happens every day and in almost every community across this country.
Any size, color, breed or mix your heart desires is at your local dog pound with just days to live.  If it is not there today, it will be tomorrow.  Check with other facilities as well.

Adopt A Puppy Or

A Rescued Pet?

                                   PUPPY

You can stick with your thoughts of coming home to the adorable little puppy who whines and yaps all night long, digs holes in the back yard, chews your slippers and your husbands work shoes, the remote control, your child’s homework and will use the bathroom on your living room carpet for the next 8 months if you really want to. If you think that you must do the initial training and upbringing in order for it to bond or respond, then you must go back and read this again. Of course the fun isn’t over yet,  just because that little puppy is now FULLY GROWN, you still have to pay $100 for spay and neutering, $50 for vaccinations, $25 for license fees and hope that your discipline has worked with the potty training, no biting, no more chewing or digging and hopefully the neighbors will stop calling to complain about his constant barking when you are gone to work all day.

A Puppy

Training time of 100 hrs of your time in the first year as well as
Replacement costs for damages: Hundreds?  More?   Then 2-4 trips to the vet for various needs.  Total cost for this would be from $500 to ~~ infinity, not to mention the headaches, apologies, excuses and threats due to an unsuccessful attempt at preventing the barking, chewing and messing in the house.
 EVERYTHING  upwards of $2,000
No doubt they’re cute.  But is this worth all this?

         RESCUE DOG FROM POUND

Every dog on this page came from death row and ultimately fit into their new home within days! There are dogs of all ages, colors and sizes at the local or area dog pound that need homes or they will be killed – usually within three days of their arrival.  They are grown, so there are no surprises as to how big they will become, you’ll see the length of hair, their personality shows through, they are already spayed and neutered,  have current vaccinations, possibly even sit on command, walk on a leash, housebroken, already past their digging and chewing stages and you have to do almost nothing except give it some love and a good home.  All this for $50 or less at the pound or an area rescue group.
Total time:

2 hours maximum
Everything.  $50 or less.
Since the dog has also already had a previous life it is only
Fair to give this  union a minimum of 7 days before making any decisions.  It will take a few days to adjust, but it will.

A 2-4 year old dog comes already housebroken, altered, past it's chewing and digging stage, walks on a leash, sits, has all it's shots - costs $50 -75 at the local dog pound.

Casey came to me in 1999.  He was a total problem dog with fighting, escaping and biting.  But then after about six months, became one of the best I’ve ever seen. Here he is now.  Even has his own ‘loft’  in Denver.  Wow!!!

Dear Beth,

I have to tell you that Cinder and Ash are great! We couldn't be

happier. Cinder has adopted Genesis {our baby} as hers. When I am in the living room and she hears Genesis wake up she goes to her bedroom door and touches the knob with her nose till I open it. When I open the door she goes right to the crib and waits for me to pick her up and then she licks her foot. It is so sweet. They are so careful around all the children.

Both are HUGE lovers and love to snuggle up with us. Ash was laying on the floor tonight while the older kids were watching TV. Tabitha {our 6yr old }came and laid on the floor with Ash and laid her head on his shoulder. He curled his neck around and laid his head on her neck. Thank you so much for giving us the opportunity to have these wonderful dogs in our home and our hearts. We are very grateful.

Sincerely,

Gretchen
