INSIDE OR OUTSIDE PETS AT
NIGHT.
If you have an ounce of this, there is virtually no decision
to be made.
But, before jumping to conclusions, see how I define INSIDE pets and also give me a
chance to explain the 'exceptions' to the rule of common sense.
IF THE INFORMATION ON THIS PAGE SEEMS
'DRASTIC' OR 'RADICAL' PLEASE READ IT IN ITS ENTIRETY - realizing that people will
spend 3 or more weeks to research their next car or truck purchase and spend time
searching for the one that meets their needs and lifestyle. How much time and
research have you or your friends and family invested in finding the appropriate breed for
your home and learning of the proper care it requires? IT IS A LIVING
BEING!!!! Please read on. It will take 5 min of your time.
I hope everyone reading this page has had a chance to take my pet survey. Keep a record of your
answers and then compare them to the survey results page. That
will help you understand more about what we've learned over the past ten years and how
easy it is to make incorrect decisions
This does not really have as much to do with weather, as it does
the safety of the pet. More than anything, we are talking about the sanity of you
and your pet as far as communication and the bonding between you. Now,
there are weather concerns. Northern states can get down to 0 in the winter.
Southwest can reach 120 and above. The dogs' water can be 120 or higher by 2pm.
Nobody can honestly justify that a domesticated animal should be forced to live in
those drastic conditions. In the back of your mind YOU KNOW BETTER.
Your dog cannot speak out and tell you of his discomfort, pain or
concerns. When he tries, it's likely you don't even pay attention.
There are exceptions to almost every rule here. (except for
permanent restraint by use of chain or rope - that is just lazy ignorance) But the
likelihood you are a legitimate exception is minimal at best.
This page is basically concerned with attempting to clarify what we
have learned in the past decade and to share this with everyone possible. Wait till
you read and see what happens.
REMEMBER, that those of you who are reading
this, are not likely to be responsible for acts of this manner, so in order for this
information to have any impact at all YOU MUST TAKE THIS AND SHARE IT WITH THOSE WHO
DO. To sit idly by and no nothing, is simply allowing the dog to die in many cases.
Don't wait till it's too late. Make a copy and place it at the doorstep or on
the desk of those who don't have this information.
There are also several other sites devoted to this topic as well.
The best one is DOGS DESERVE BETTER. So,
this is by no means 'only my opinion'.
First of all, I will clarify this piece, as I author it, is
speaking solely of dogs and cats, pot bellied pigs and only the animals we enjoy as part
of our lives

Secondly, when I speak of 'inside' IT ONLY MEANS a minimum of four nights each week, for
one hour prior to when you go to bed, spending the night, and going back outside when the
family rises the following morning. This does mean inside your home
- however - We do not suggest, on this page, that your pets must have free reign of the
home or access to furniture. For the hour you are still awake, it's good for the dog to be
with you. A simple blanket along side your favorite chair can be his or her place. For the
remainder of the night, the pet can sleep comfortably on the same blanket near the back
door till morning You will have an opportunity to make sure the dog is not injured, nor
has any unwanted growths, viruses or infections in the eyes or ears. .I
realize that 'regular vet checks', although a marvelous idea, are not always in the cards
for many families. So this would be preventative procedures from home. |

The reason I bring this up, is that when speaking to vets, they
tell me unanimously that the biggest reason they end up euthanizing the largest majority
of the animals they do, (nearly 75,000 annually ) is because the human failed to recognize
the pet had any injury or illness for several months to several years before they brought
the pet in. When they did bring the pet in, it had become so serious, the cost was simply
prohibitive ($500 +) and the decision was made, in order to save money to kill the pet.
Had the human been responsible and noticed this ailment at its' infancy on the pet, the
vet bill would certainly have been simply the cost of the office visit, plus some
medications - $40 or 50 tops.
So, not only was the pet doing everything it knew to make you happy and be a loyal friend,
the human ignored it' to the point of suffering for several months up to several years,
and the reward the pet receives is to be killed because the human doesn't want to spend
the money.
Yes, I know about the problems of expecting your first child as
well as claiming your existing children have allergies. I have separate pages on
this site with the largest and most recent studies regarding both of these. PLEASE
SEE 'PREGNANCY'. and also ALLERGIES before making any
decision to relinquish a pet or lock it outside. Pets inside the home will prevent your
children for contracting these ailments and can even cure some of the existing ones.
Pregnancy, all you have to do is realize it takes some patience and understanding
and the dog will become the biggest protector of your child, not to mention one of the
best friends your child will ever have. So, now we've covered the biggest part of the
health issues of the pets. Let me remind everyone that nobody EVER told you that putting
your pet outside was the right thing to do, or was even a good thing. People ONLY put
their pets outside as a result of laziness ( I don't want to vacuum, or I can't house
train the pet, and so many other poor excuses ) or failure to be successful in training
the pet to do what the human expects. You cannot tell me in your heart, you honestly think
it's BEST for the pet. If you've ever watched a pet when all the humans enter into the
home and refuse to allow him or her to follow, you've seen the sadness. They just love the
companionship that humans give them.
The very very least you could do if you think there 's a good reason for keeping the pets
outside, is to make sure the pet has a minimum of one full acre of space to play and, yes,
another pet of similar size and energy to keep it company. For $35 you will find a real
good match at the local dog pound - one that will certainly die to morrow if you don't'.
Save a life. A second COMPATIBLE pet will actually reduce your responsibility of time
spent with the pet, as it now has a playmate.
Now, there will be some bucktoothed yahoo claiming 'God put dogs
outside" as he practices his cipherin'' and brags about finishing the sixth grade
after only 3 tries. Well, Jethro, he put US outside, too. And surprisingly enough, many
who study ancient man seem to think that one reason we were able to survive as well as we
did against some of the predatory animals is because we befriended dogs. They
slept with us, but used their incredible hearing to recognize oncoming and unwanted in
time to alert us. In other words, we should owe them something more than a small back yard
of loneliness or worse yet a dog run or a stupid Chain!!!
This also tells us that we have domesticated them in this manner
for over tens of thousands of years. So, the 'bucktooth' defense holds NO WATER |

DOGS LOCKED OUTSIDE:
*** suffer from anxiety and do much more damage to property and his or her surroundings
*** become more anti social throughout this type of treatment - resulting many times
in the relinquishing of said pet to the local dog pound. (excessive barking at night,
uncontrollable digging and destruction of surroundings, constant jumping and even
escaping in an effort to find anyone who will provide him or her with the attention
they require.)
*** will be much more likely to suffer from unrecognized ailments such as infections,
viruses and other injuries for extended periods of time. The worst part of this is that
when ultimately seen by a vet, the cost to correct the ailment is now in the hundreds or
even thousands of dollars and the human decides to have the dog euthanized in order to
save money. Clearly, had the human noticed this red eye, ear infection or swollen leg 6
months earlier, the vet would likely have been able to correct it with a simple
vaccination
and a few pills of anti-bionics.
*** almost certainly be expected to protect the property in the back yard as well as
the residents of the home with no training or guidance of any kind. Yes, the dog will
bite someone in the near future, but it will not likely be an unwanted intruder, but
more likely be a guest or utility man who is welcome in the yard, but nobody ever made
it clear to the dog as to what to look for. Another poor excuse to have the poor dog put
to sleep. The same dog is also the neighborhood nuisance for barking throughout the night
-
barking which the owners have, over time, disregarded due to its' consistency. Most
importantly, even if the dog were to recognize an intruder who has gained access inside
the home to burglarize or cause harm to the residents, there is no way to gain access for
the dog, so protection of the most important commodity on the premises - the residents- is
simply made impossible.
***In the northern American communities, the winter temperature can drop below zero.
***In the southern (especially southwestern US, the pets water can be 120 degrees by 2pm
IT DOESN'T MATTER THAT PEOPLE USED TO DO THIS TO THEIR DOGS - WE USED TO THINK LEAVING
YOUR
CHILDREN ALONE WITH A PRIEST WAS SAFE, TOO.
Bottom line is: Nobody with any knowledge or true understanding has ever told you that
keeping
your dog outside at night time was a good thing or the right thing to do. You've simply
made
that choice out of ignorance to what the dog truly wants and needs or out of laziness for
refusing to take the time and effort to properly train the dog. The dog suffers throughout
the duration of his existence here and will ultimately live 5-7 years less. |

OK, 'We want a guard dog'. OK, Did you have a
professional help you to guide this dog to becoming a correct guard dog? If not, you will
certainly become deaf to the dogs persistent barking and won't recognize an intruder when
it happens anyway. Of course your neighbors are all tired of the dog barking and have
levied several complaints to animal control against you. The pet will certainly bite
someone, but it will not be a burglar or even an unwanted person. It will be a child
friend of one of your kids, a meter man, or even escape your yard in an attempt to
find someone who will give it the affection it desires, and will become startled and
scared while out and bite someone. All of these situations will bring lawsuits against
you. It's your dog. You could loose your home and the dog has the chance of being
put to sleep now. It did nothing against your wishes or commands, only what it
instinctually knew. But, because of you, it will die.
TEN COMMANDMENTS OF ANIMAL GUARDIANSHIP
1. When you adopt me, remember that my life
is likely to last 15 or more years. That is your responsibility to care for me during that
period of time - NOT to dump me at the pound or on some unsuspecting acquaintance.
2. Please give me time to understand what it is you want from me. Change can be more
difficult for me than for you. I don't speak your language and need time. Also please
understand what is good for my health, mental status and social skills may be
jeopardized by your failure to provide my needs. I feel pain, cold, heat and in
loneliness, I react.
3. Please don't be angry with me for a long time, and don't lock me up alone as punishment
Do not throw me outside forever nor tie me to a post.
I need exercise. love and I need these things from you. You have your human family, your
friends,
your entertainment and I ONLY HAVE YOU!!!
4. Please trust me and help me to trust you .. . . it is crucial for mine as well as
your well being.
5. Talk to me . . . even if you think I don't understand your words I understand
your voice and love it when you speak to me and stroke me.
6. Before you hit me remember that I have teeth and claws and could easily hurt you
but I choose not to bite and scratch you because I love you..
Also, remember that each time you strike me, it is only an admission on your part that you
have failed once again to do what's necessary to communicate.
7. Be aware, that however you treat me, I WILL NEVER FORGET!!!
8. Before you scold me for being uncooperative or bad, ask yourself if maybe
something is wrong and there is another reason for my behavior.
Perhaps I am sick, hot, old or just plain tired, frustrated and weak.
PLEASE TRY TO UNDERSTAND WHAT IT IS LIKE TO BE ME AND PUT YOURSELF IN MY
PLACE.
9. Please take care of me when I get old and don't abandon me, for you too will grow
old. Please notice when I am ill because I need you to take
me to the vet for help when I am ill just as you need to see a doctor.
10. Go with me on the most difficult journeys. Never say, "I can't bear to
watch" or "Do it when I leave" because I need you with me even at the end
of
my journeys. Please always do what is best for me even if it is unbearable for you
to do so because I love you and trust that you will. |

| continued - Now, if you were robbed or the wife
or kids raped, the dog could not gain entrance to assist you anyway. If you think the dog
cannot hear an outside intruder from inside, you really are quite uninformed on the
ability a dog has to hear. It will certainly alert you if an unwanted guest as small as a
cat walks across your yard. But once inside the house, the dog can also protect you and the
family members should a criminal gain entry.
Dogs locked outside become less sociable, causing injury to an innocent victim at some
point. They become ridden with joint problems for lack of exercise, cause tremendous
damage to the yard, your belongings and plants, simply for lack of better things to keep
him or her busy. They also receive many more complaints from neighbors for the incessant
barking at night.
What really angers me is that each and everyone of you who have gotten this far but are
still arguing to keep the pet outside, refuse to take the time to walk your dog at all -
let alone on a daily basis. Not one of you has ever read a book on this because they argue
this over 250 pages and with bigger words. So, be glad you didn't get caught up in that
'nightmare' of reading hell.
ANYONE with any compassion for animals would read up on the appropriate care
needed for a healthy, happy pet that they are now responsible for. "Did you do
that?" Why not? Oh, you 'assumed' that you knew and that your experience could get
you through this. So, the life of this animal has been based on your assumptions rather
than any proven, solid facts. My, how wonderfully compassionate you are. I feel sorry for
your kids. You're probably not married anymore either are you. Wow. what a shock.
Oh, yes, before I forget, if you or your kids have allergies...... bring the pets inside. SEE 'ALLERGIES' page. Over the
past 10 years every study points to healthier residents of homes with inside pets -
preventing allergies and asthma in younger children and even curing some pet allergies by
bringing them back inside at night by strengthening your immune system. not unlike anti
biotics. they fight off one disease to strengthen your system so it can fight another.
Now for those of you who still think it's OK to put your pet outside all night
every night or worse yet to chain the poor thing, GET A CLUE.
AGAIN, I STRONGLY STRESS THIS:
THOSE WHO READ THIS ARE NOT THE LIKELY
ONES TO MISTREAT PETS IN THESE WAYS. THEREFORE, IF THIS MESSAGE IS TO REACH THOSE
WHO IGNORANTLY TOSS THEIR PETS OUTSIDE WITH UNATTAINABLE EXPECTATIONS AS WELL AS A TOTAL
LACK OF RESPONSIBILITY, YOU MUST MAKE A COPY OF THIS AND PLACE IT AT THEIR DOOR, ON THEIR
DESK, IN THEIR MAILBOX OR WHAT EVER MEANS NECESSARY FOR THEM TO READ THIS.
OTHERWISE, HOW WILL THEY EVER KNOW? |
